The Role of Hospice Volunteers
When most people think of hospice care, they picture nurses and doctors working to keep patients comfortable – and that’s definitely a big part of it. But there’s another piece of hospice care that’s just as important, but often less talked about: our volunteers.
At Holly’s Haven, volunteers bring something that can’t be prescribed – presence. In a world full of robots and AI, they are able to offer simple human connection in moments that matter most.
Companionship, Not Clinical Care
Our hospice volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds. They don’t provide medical treatments or handle medications. Instead, their focus is on the heart and soul – being there for patients and families in ways that go beyond clinical care.
That might look like:
- Sitting beside a patient and listening to stories from their younger years.
- Reading a favorite book or playing soft music.
- Writing letters for a patient who wants to leave notes for loved ones.
- Bringing laughter, light conversation, and a sense of normalcy.
- Giving a caregiver the chance to step out for a breath of fresh air, knowing someone kind and capable is with their loved one.
We also have volunteers that go into our facilities and play piano and viola, or bring their therapy animals for some fur filled comfort and cuddles.
Our volunteers bring companionship and comfort, meeting emotional and social needs that medical care alone can’t always fill.
Bridging the Gap
One of the most beautiful things about hospice volunteers is the way they help bridge the gap between medical care and daily life.
While nurses, CNAs, and doctors focus on pain management, symptom control, and medical needs, volunteers focus on the human side of care – the stories, the smiles, and the little moments of joy that make each day meaningful.
They also serve as a gentle bridge between the hospice team and the patient’s family or caregivers. Volunteers often notice small changes or needs that can be passed along to the care team, helping ensure everyone stays informed and supported.
Their presence can also ease the emotional load for families. We often hear from loved ones that having a trusted volunteer visit regularly reassures them that their loved one isn’t alone – that someone truly cares and is happy to just be with them in the moment.
The Gift of Presence
Hospice volunteering isn’t about doing – it’s about being.
Being there in quiet moments.
Being someone who listens without judgment.
Being a reminder that even in difficult times, kindness and human connection still exist.
Our volunteers come from all walks of life, but they share one thing in common: a compassionate heart and a willingness to show up for others. Sometimes that means laughter and light conversation. Other times, it means peaceful silence and a hand to hold.
No matter what form it takes, the gift of presence is powerful and beautiful.
The Holly’s Haven Volunteer Family
At Holly’s Haven, we couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers. They are an essential part of our care team for the emotional and spiritual healing they help bring.
Our volunteers are carefully trained and supported by our Volunteer Coordinator, who ensures they feel confident, prepared, and valued in their role. Whether they’re visiting patients at home, in a facility, or helping with community events, each volunteer represents the heart of Anchor of Hope Hospice: compassion, connection, and hope.
