Introducing Little Hands, Big Hearts: A New Way for Children to Bring Joy to Hospice Patients

At Anchor of Hope Hospice, we believe that compassion knows no age – and even the smallest hands can make a big impact. That’s why we’re thrilled to launch our newest community partnership program, Little Hands, Big Hearts, a heartwarming initiative that invites local children to share love and creativity with our hospice patients.

The Inspiration Behind Little Hands, Big Hearts

Children have a special way of bringing light into the world. Their artwork, laughter, and imagination radiate a kind of joy that reminds us of the beauty in small gestures.

Because hospice volunteer guidelines do not allow children to have direct contact with patients, our team looked for a way to safely include them in our mission of comfort and connection. Little Hands, Big Hearts was created to give daycares, preschools, and classrooms a meaningful opportunity to contribute – while brightening the days of our patients and families.

“Every card, every crayon drawing, every handmade flower tells our patients that they are loved and remembered,” says Ashley Golberding, Volunteer Coordinator.. “This program helps children learn about kindness and gives our patients moments of joy that words can’t describe.”

How the Program Works

Through Little Hands, Big Hearts, local daycare and preschool teachers invite their students to create:

  • Bright and cheerful artwork
  • Uplifting cards and letters
  • Simple crafts or decorations for patient rooms and hospice facilities

Once completed, our hospice volunteers and staff safely deliver these creations to patients or display them throughout our care centers. Each piece becomes a gentle reminder that love surrounds them – even from little ones they’ve never met.

A Lesson in Compassion for the Next Generation

Beyond brightening patient days, Little Hands, Big Hearts gives children the chance to learn empathy, generosity, and the power of community care. By sharing their artwork and kind messages, they learn that compassion isn’t about doing something big – it’s about showing up for others with love.
